British Pepper and Spice acquires exclusive European licence for Gourmet Garden
The British Pepper & Spice Company (BP&S), one of Primary's portfolio companies, has acquired the exclusive European licence for Gourmet Garden. New equity and debt funding of over £2.2 million has been provided by Primary and Lloyds TSB Commercial Finance to effect the acquisition of the European licence and to provide for the significant development of the Gourmet Garden market and brand.
Gourmet Garden is a range of chilled herb products, initially comprising Basil, Garlic, Parsley, Ginger, Mint, Chilli and Chives. Innovative patent-protected technology and production enables Gourmet Garden to halt product degradation in its herbs whilst maintaining their fresh-tasting, crisp qualities. The herb blends are sold in individual 120g tubes, contain only natural ingredients and have a chilled shelf-life of 90 days (9 months if frozen).
BP&S is a leading UK manufacturer of herbs and spices for the retail and food ingredients markets. It produces own-label and proprietary branded products for almost all the major multiples and leading independents within the retail and food service sectors. It is also a key supplier of bulk herbs, spices and related products to many of the UK's leading food manufacturers. Primary Capital supported the £7.6 million management buy-out of BP&S in May 1998.
Gourmet Garden has been developed over the last three years by a subsidiary of Berri Ltd (a major Australian food manufacturer). Launched in Australia last October, the consumer reception has exceeded all expectations. BP&S has been working with Botanical since 1998 in preparing the UK market for launch – Gourmet Garden will be available in most major retail outlets from late October, supported by a very substantial marketing and advertising programme.
